Celebrate Excellence in Education: Nominate Outstanding Educators by April 15!
Hello everyone. I have two instances in which I would like to use Mastery Paths.
Scenario One
Students in one course are studying four different topics. I would like to use Mastery Paths so students only have access to modules that pertain to the topic they've been assigned. (It's not possible to dis-aggregate the course into four separate courses.)
I thought of using a quiz that simply asks them to select the topic they've been assigned. Then, based on their response, they are only given assess to the module they've identified. I read Kona Jones' post, and haven't been able to get that to work in this case.
Scenario Two
Another course that I'm developing is competency-based. Students take an authentic assessment in a prototype design lab with reviewers present. Scores representing how well students use the equipment to produce a prototype will determine the modules in the Canvas course they are required to complete.
To avoid manual entry, I'm thinking of creating an assignment in Canvas for multiple reviewers. They would use the assignment to score the authentic assessment. Each area of the rubric would represent a specific module in the course. Would Canvas generate Mastery Paths for students who fall below mastery level for each area of the rubric? (For example, if a student scores At Mastery on sketching and 3D printing but Below Mastery for design thinking and PPE safety, would Canvas create a Mastery Path that directs that student to the modules on Design Thinking and Personal Protective Equipment?)
Geez . . . just typing this is fracturing my brain. I welcome your suggestions. I'm starting to think I'm asking the same question in two different ways.
@klwhiteside , greetings!
For your first scenario, I'm wondering if use differentiated assignments would actually be more efficient than Mastery Paths. I say this because everything for a Path needs to be within the SAME module, which I don't think you are wanting. Using differentiated assignments you could have a different Module for the different topics. Granted students would see the name of the Module, but if you differentiated the assignments, discussions, quizzes (and just add the content - pages, files to the assignment directions) then only the students who were assigned to the topic would be able to see them.
For the second scenario, no, MasteryPaths won't (currently) assign paths based on outcomes. You'd need to have a different assessment for each competency - so break apart your rubric into multiple assessments. Then, based on how the student did on each assessment, would determine which content they needed to do. For this, design-wise, you'd want the assessment for each competency in a different Module. Then in that Module would be any assignments, pages, etc. That the student might need to do based on their score for that competency. Ex: If they did well, then maybe they get a page saying, great work, you don't need to do anything in this Module. If they didn't do well then they'd get the video, handouts, assignments, etc... that they would need to complete.
Does this help/make sense?

Hi Kona,
Thanks for your reply. I hadn't considered differentiated assignments in the first scenario. That sounds like a great solution. I'm going to test it.
In my second scenario, the assessment isn't within Canvas; it takes place in a lab. Scores from the reviewers will be totaled to determine which modules in Canvas students need to complete. However, having individual rubrics for each module--instead of having one rubric for the entire course--would be helpful. I think this will have to be a manual process or differentiation might work for this case as well.
One additional question . . . what is the process for making a page differentiated content?
Thanks!
@klwhiteside , for the second scenario, it's ok if the start of the path is something that the graders are manually entering into Canvas (like an assignment grade). As long as the path is set up correctly pointwise for the assignment, the manual grade entry would still work just fine for putting students on the correct path. As for getting the page on the path, you edit the page and scroll to the bottom of the page and check the box to "Allow in mastery paths." Here's the guide for more information - https://community.canvaslms.com/docs/DOC-13119-4152668278
Hope this helps! Kona
