Celebrate Excellence in Education: Nominate Outstanding Educators by April 15!
Our director of Institutional research has some very specific funding to spend to support evaluation of institutional effectiveness. Are there any programs, LTI's, anything out there which could partner with canvas data/analytics to help evaluate institutional effectiveness. I acknowledge this is an incredibly broad sweeping question but I have always admired the combined genius found in this group! Thanks!
Hey @amandataintor ,
Let's see...where to start...
There's a number of products that integrate with Canvas, mostly leveraging the API, that can help with data reporting. Two good examples of this are Instructor Insight and Dropout Detective by https://community.canvaslms.com/community/answers/partnerships/aspiredu?sr=search&searchId=31de8ade-.... I'm sure there are more that have this sort of turn-key approach.
There's Google Analytics. This uses custom JS to send info back to Google whenever stuff happens inside your site. I don't know what sort of products exist within this ecosystem, I've only barely begun to scratch the surface of GA: /blogs/adamwilliams/2017/04/08/journey-through-google-analytics-part-1?sr=search&searchId=58a1696e-d..., /blogs/adamwilliams/2017/04/08/jtga-part-2-google-analytics-dashboards?sr=search&searchId=7348821f-9..., and /blogs/adamwilliams/2017/04/09/jtga-part-21-24-hour-observations?sr=search&searchId=7348821f-97e9-4c.... Here's the best how-to for getting started there https://community.canvaslms.com/docs/DOC-9211-how-to-set-up-google-analytics-for-canvas?sr=search&se....
Then there's Canvas Data... There's plenty of opportunities to spend money here! Whether it's locally on building up your Canvas Data infrastructure and systems, or whether it's going for the Hosted option, and then paying for SaaS solutions that integrate with Amazon Redshift. Tableau, https://community.canvaslms.com/docs/DOC-8121-tableau-workbook-examples?sr=search&searchId=f8bf04b3-... https://community.canvaslms.com/docs/DOC-6755?sr=search&searchId=f8bf04b3-2575-4ac3-831f-2afd1f3c1c1.... I think some institutions might even be partnering with larger data analytics companies like Civitas.
Long story short, figure out whether you want specific tools, or broad platforms, and whether you want ultimate control and customization (doing it yourself) or simple setup and maintenance (paying someone else to do it), and then head in that direction. The money won't have any problem spending itself.
Amanda -- If you go to the Partnerships page in this Community and click on the analytics link, you'll get a list of 20 companies with official partnerships with Instructure. These companies provide solutions that have been vetted, to some degree, by the folks at Instructure. I'm biased, of course, but I think it would be worth your while to click through the links and invest a few minutes to read the company descriptions. Even better, come to InstructureCon and visit the Exhibit Hall.
In our case, Instructor Insight helps to identify courses with high and low levels of struggling students (course risk). Dropout Detective does exactly what its name implies and helps schools with the ultimate in institutional effectiveness -- successful students.
We are giving the Instructional Designers area a little bit of love and just want to check in with you. This will also bring this question new attention.
