[ARCHIVED] Identifying Students outside US?

Has anyone developed a way to identify if a user is outside the US?  We're trying to establish which ones may have trouble accessing Canvas and related course materials (especially in China), but I'm unsure if there's a way to gather info on which ones they are.  I was considering possibly what time zone they've set, or perhaps their most recent IPs.  But before I reinvent the wheel, I was wondering if any other admins have already explored this.
