[ARCHIVED] How does canvas measure "participation" versus page view in analytics?

What does canvas count as a page view and as a participation. I look at a specific student's analytics and it tells me that she viewed the page 309 times in a single day and participated 1 time. How do I interpret that? What counts as a view and what counts as participation.
