Celebrate Excellence in Education: Nominate Outstanding Educators by April 15!
I am unable to connect to google drive in one of my classes because every time I click on the Google drive tab on the side or the assignment it says bad authentication credentials. My other classes are working just fine with google drive, so I do not understand why only one of my classes won't connect to google drive. My google drive account is specific to my school district, and my teacher made it where we can only access the google drive if I use my school district based google drive account which I already am.
Solved! Go to Solution.
We are stuck at that same point. We are waiting to hear back from Canvas Support too. If I hear back I will post it here. Please do the same. I appreciate your help. 🙂
Yes we are having the same issues in K12 in Texas. It seems to be a hit or miss on how get the Bad authentication credentials error. I know last week they worked on the Google LTI but we are still having issues.
Canvas help us!!
We also are now being bit with this error, and have no idea what the solution is.
We also began to see this issue arise over the weekend. Canvas is there a resolution?
We are experiencing the same type of issue. For the past several weeks, I have occasionally gotten a “bad authentication credentials” when trying to access Canvas assignments that use the Google Cloud Assignment external tool. The problem is intermittent but seems to be happening more frequently. Today, I was also unable to add a new doc using the external tool. When I close out and open Chrome again and log back in, the problem sometimes fixes itself, but sometimes it doesn’t. I tried unregistering and then re-registering my Google Drive in Canvas but that didn’t seem to make any difference, either.
We turned on the google LTI 1.3 a few months back and everything was working great. Now, over the past few days we are beginning to experience the bad authentication error again or their links from the day before are broken and seem to be going to some other resource.
sure hope canvas is aware of these errors.
I worked with a teacher this morning following the instructions that Canvas Support gave her yesterday afternoon. Here is my response to Canvas, from this morning:
Good morning,
We just walked through all the steps you provided her yesterday.
When she tries to add the assignment, she gets the Bad Authorization Credentials error. We hit refresh and get a message that she needs to authorize her drive. We select Authorize and the select the correct Google account, and then the Next button appears. When we click on the Next button, NOTHING HAPPENS.
We are stuck at this point. We are awaiting a response from Canvas.

@brooke_wilkins1 Sure will. It's getting frustrating.
So, now that we're back from Winter Break, has anybody heard anything about a fix for this?
Hello again,
I went back and checked the Canvas Support email inbox and found this message from Canvas:
Last week we rolled out an update to Canvas which had a big focus on solving this issue. If you are still having trouble with your Google Drive access please reply to this email to let us know and we'll be happy to trouble shoot it with you. (Received on 12/23/2020).
I logged a new support ticket with Canvas yesterday for the same issue:
"Bad authentication credentials"
When I try to use the Google Apps tool in the Rich Text Editor, I get the message above.
No problem with LTI.
How is it working for everyone else?
Yesterday(1-4-21), we had many courses show the Bad authentication credentials error which has caused huge issues for us. If you can assist us with this error or provide some suggestions, we would love to hear from you.
We have not heard anything back yet. Still an issue and it doesn't occur all of the time, which seriously adds to the frustration.
Texas here. We have many teachers having this issue. I can see the issue when I impersonate the teacher and as myself. Canvas support was of no help.
@kmmcdonald We are Texas as well. Still having this issue.
Good morning to all...
Here is the latest email I received from Canvas support regarding the Bad Authentication Credentials issue (email came in about 15 minutes ago):
I had a look into this problem and found that you are correct. This is a problem that multiple users are experiencing.
Our next level engineers are already aware of the issue and are currently working on the problem. I have linked that issue to this ticket so that you can be notified as soon as the problem is resolved.
Unfortunately, at this time we are not able to say when this issue will be resolved but please be assured that it will be as soon as possible.
I hope they find a solution to this because it is growing in our district and out teachers are becoming frustrated
So, I received the following communication from a teacher that was experiencing this issue.
"Just wanted to let you know that my neighbor teacher and facilitator were able to finally figure out the problem we were all beginning to have with uploading documents via Google Cloud."
Here is the copy of the email she received from a district facilitator:
"Yes, Google Cloud Assignments was what we started with at the beginning of the year. Google discontinued it in favor of the Google LTI. We migrated in September when they announced the new Google LTI, knowing Google Cloud was no longer supported and would be discontinued this year. Some people continued to use it, at their own risk, or not knowing any better. Google LTI is the same technology/programming that Google Classroom uses."
When I asked the teacher "When you use the Google LTI method, everything works as it should?", her reply to me was: "Correct. I do not get the "Bad Authentication Credentials" message with the Google LTI Method"
So.....what do y'all think?
It's too bad that the LTI has all those Google Classroom-ish hoops to go through in terms of opening, using, and grading. The other tool was much simpler to use, according to the people at our site who switched over. Is there anything easier to use in Canvas that supports Google Docs?
I think that is accurate. Nearly every issue we have had with Google in Canvas has been the old Cloud LTI.
