[ARCHIVED] Global Navigation for Teacher role only?

I vaguely remember seeing some CSS or JS trick to have a global icon only visible for a specific role, but I can't seem to find that thread anymore.  Does anyone have info on this - either the trick itself or link to previous threads about this topic?

The use case is a link to our syllabus creation/guideline page, but only visible to our faculty and not to students.

We use a conditional statement in our JS to tailor links presented to the users course role; the global option stays the same for everyone.  A pitfall to this is if a user is in the teacher role anywhere in the instance, links presented will always be what is curated for teachers.  It seems to work well for us so far, though...
