Celebrate Excellence in Education: Nominate Outstanding Educators by April 15!
Hi
We are looking to suspend users on a temporary basis and wonder if anyone can confirm whether notifications from the course, ie announcements, emails etc are still sent to suspended accounts?
Would be grateful for clarification.
Many thanks.

Hi @sueltyler In addition to the great information provided by @Chris_Hofer,
I was able to test this and I can confirm that suspended accounts still do receive notifications if they have active enrollments in Canvas.
The suspension of the account only affects their ability to access the account, it does not affect their enrollments, so the notifications for the courses still go out.
I would advise you to create an idea for that.
How do I create a new idea conversation in the Instructure Community?
Good morning, @sueltyler ...
This Guide, How do I suspend and reactivate users in an accoun... - Instructure Community (canvaslms.com), doesn't really indicate anything about notifications after a user is suspended from a school's Canvas account. However, I would suggest that you use the "share your feedback" link at the bottom of the page (found below the two red buttons: "Ask a Question" and "View Related Guides") to fill out a form for the Canvas Documentation Team. You might want to make a suggestion for that particular Guide that they include information about notifications and what happens if a user is suspended. The Documentation Team values our feedback, and they'll review your comments to determine if anything needs to be changed or if things could be made more clear.
Hope this helps a bit!

It seems that suspending a user should disable notifications to that user and all Canvas activity. Was there an idea created for this?
Not only do the user's receive notifications after they have been suspended, but they can reply to the actual emails which will be received by the instructor or other students. For example, if the instructor sends an Inbox/Conversation to all students, the suspended user can reply to the message via email and it will be received by all. This would also apply to Announcement replies (assuming that option is enabled of course).
We are looking at suspending a user. In the absence of an automatic setting, I will disable all notifications in the user's account first. I appreciate this discussion to help guide us.
I contacted instructure as I was concerned about this and Instructure support confirmed back after testing
"Concerning your inquiry about whether suspended accounts can still receive notifications, I couldn't locate any information indicating a resolution to this matter. Nevertheless, I replicated that scenario by using a test student. In my observations, the student did not receive any notifications. I even conducted a test by sending a message through the Inbox, but no notifications were generated. I trust this provides the information you were seeking."
Not say there maybe instances due to individual setups that may affect this (self hosted).
Would be interested to hear anything different to this.
Thanks
It seems a suspended user doesn't get any message when attempting to login that they have been suspended either - I can't find any guidance that explains what a suspended user sees when trying to login.
I know this because a student we have suspended shared a video showing that when they pressed on the discovery url link to login it didn't take them in through the saml link via O365 as you'd expect but instead reverted back to the discovery url instead with no explanation of what was going on. The student was logged in to their email so clicking on the saml link in an email to open another window would normally use Single Sign On and take them straight in - but when suspended this is preventing that from happening and there isn't any explanation for the student!
Is there something I'm missing somewhere?
