Is it possible to disable comments in a Studio video after it has been embedded within a course with comments allowed?
Solved! Go to Solution.
Hello @carpenter ...
Unfortunately, once you have embedded a Studio video into your course, you cannot remove the comments...at least there is no interface that allows you to toggle the comments on/off within the embed. What you have to do is to remove the Studio video from the page and then re-add the Studio video...this time being sure to keep the toggle switch turned off that allows for comments. Then, the Studio video will display without the comments interface for you like you want.
I hope this helps. Let Community members know if you have any other questions about this. Take care, stay safe, and be well.

Thank you @Chris_Hofer. That was my work-around suggestion for my faculty member, but thought maybe I was missing something! 😉
I understand how to turn off the Display Media toggle but my question is once I do that, how do I still see the insights to view who has watched the video and other data provided there?
Hi @sfike ...
You can go to your Studio library (by clicking on the "Studio" icon on the left-hand side global navigation bar) and then navigating to the video in your library. You should be able to see the Insights section there.
Hope this helps!
That definitely helps, thanks. I have one more question...I am creating curriculum for other teachers in their course. So the videos are in my studio. How would the teacher of the course see the insights since they can't go to my Studio on the global navigation? Would it be available on their course studio or would I need to share the video with each teacher I am using the video for in their course?
@sfike ...
Instructors should also have a "Studio" course navigation menu (in addition to the "Studio" button on the far left-hand side global navigation menu).

An instructor can log into his/her course and then click on the "Studio" course navigation button, and any Studio videos used in the course should be listed there. Then accessing the Insights would be the same process as going through the "Studio" global navigation button. You could certainly share the video in Studio with the instructor if you wanted. That way, the instructor can access it in the "Shared with Me" area of his/her Canvas library.
Hope this information also helps.
Thank you so much for the quick response 😁
Except your solution doesn't work. When I am in Studio, I select the "settings" wheel and turn the comments slider off. But there is no way to save this and when I go to the page I want to embed the video on and embed it then look at the settings for the video, the slider is back on. What am I doing wrong?
@stephanie_moore ...
I just tested this out again in my own sandbox course, and it works as I have described in my earlier response. I'm not sure what you mean by the "Settings" wheel. Are you embedding your Studio media on a course content page following these steps?

You should be looking for the "Display Media Tabs" toggle switch to determine if you want comments to display under the video or not within your course page. Try it out with the comments on first...and if you don't like that view, just remove the video off of the page temporarily, and then re-embed the video...making sure to keep that toggle switch off.
Does this help to answer your question?
@Chris_Hofer Yes, I followed those instructions. Except I'm not clear. As that page states, the video comes up with "Display Media Tabs" green (as stated) does this mean comments are off or on? I've been sliding it to gray hoping to turn it off, but any time I come back to Studio, it's green again.
@stephanie_moore ...
When you embed (add) Studio media to a content page in your course, the toggle switch seems to be "on" by default for the "Display Media Tabs" option. Just toggle it "off" (so it is gray), and then your Studio media (video) will be added to your page without the comments interface below it. Does this help to answer your question?
@Chris_Hofer I have been turning it to gray before embedding, but if I look at the settings of the embedded video, comments are still set on. Sorry if I've been unclear.
@stephanie_moore ...
Ah! I see what you mean now. You are referring to the "Comments" setting once the Studio media is embedded on a content page...as described under the "View Comments" and "View Comment Timeline" headings of this Guide: How do I play a media file in Canvas Studio? - Instructure Community (canvaslms.com). The Guide indicates those are "inline" comments. I tried adding my own comments to a video in my Studio library and then embedding that video on a content page in my own sandbox course. However, those inline comments weren't showing up as I expected them to. (This is with the "Display Media Tabs" toggle switch turned off.) However, if I try re-embedding the video with the "Display Media Tabs" toggle turned on (green), then the "Comments" toggle you see in the "Settings" menu does have some visible functionality. If you keep the "Comments" toggle switch on, you will see dots above the playhead timeline of the video where someone has left a comment. But, if you toggle the "Comments" off, then you will not see that dot. So, with the "Comments" in the off position, you will not see those comments show up on top of the video. But, if you turn them on, you will see the comments on top of the video. The discussion interface (by enabling the "Display Media Tabs" toggle) will still show beneath the video...no matter if you have "Comments" turned on/off. And, you'll still be able to see exactly when those comments were posted...and by who.
I hope I didn't make this too confusing...and I hope it will help to explain how things currently work with those toggle switches.
But that's not the issue. If comments are enabled, the embedded Youtube video from Studio will not play. It will only play if you turn comments off. But when you come back to the page, comments are on again. If you turn comments off in Studio and embed, the comments are back on in the Canvas page. There seems to be no way to keep comments turned off. However, if I embed directly from Youtube, without using Studio, the video plays fine.
@lparker4 ...
I've never heard of a Studio embedded video not being able to play (whether there are associated comments or not). I would suggest that you reach out to Canvas Support to report this if it continues to be an issue for you...so that they can look into any potential issues for you.
Our team has worked out a solution to remove the Comments media tab from Studio videos that already appear on pages - hope these video instructions clarify how to do this - it has saved us heaps of time!! https://usc-studio.instructuremedia.com/embed/3d97ab62-2ec9-471d-abd2-f8a3c4409041
