Celebrate Excellence in Education: Nominate Outstanding Educators by April 15!
Can I copy a quiz and rename it to use again (or parts of it) in the same course?
Solved! Go to Solution.
Hi, @gail_stover , the answer depends on whether you created a "New Quiz" using the New Quizzes tool or a new quiz in Classic (Old) Quizzes. If it's a quiz of the New Quizzes type, navigate to the Quizzes tab and select Duplicate from the three-dot menu that displays to the right. New Quizzes are built on the assignment content type, and general instructions are in How do I duplicate an assignment?
If it's a Classic Quiz, the instructor would need to create a second quiz using the questions from the question bank used in the first quiz.
Hi @gail_stover Welcome to the Canvas Community.
I thought it would be possible, but as far as I can see you can only do this How do I move or copy a question from one item bank to another in New Quizzes? But not a whole quiz. You can copy a quiz to another course, to Commons and to another instructor but not within the same course unfortunately. I will keep researching though.
Sorry I'm not more helpful.

Thank you. I found my answer. Actually, according to the link you shared
(thank you). It reads that a NEW Quiz cannot be copied even though it is an
assignment. That is why I was so confused. Look at the 2nd to last
sentence in the screenshot below under NOTES. Thanks again for your help!

@gail_stover , I can see how that is confusing! "Quizzes" in the context of that note refers to Old (Classic) Quizzes, and Quizzes.LTI is the previous name for what is now "New Quizzes"—which can be copied as they are based on assignments. We'll ask our Doc Team to see about rewording that note. Thanks for pointing it out!
According to the 2nd to last bullet point - "Assignments currently cannot
be duplicated for quizzes."
So I am assuming I CANNOT (we have tried without success) coping a New
Quiz. It overwrites the original New Quiz. Am I missing something? What
am I doing wrong if it is possible to copy a New Quiz.
Clarification would be appreciated. THANKS!

@gail_stover , again, it is confusing: it's a question of nomenclature, as there are two separate quiz tools, both of which can be used simultaneously in the same course. In that documentation, "for quizzes" specifically refers to Classic Quizzes, which cannot be duplicated in the manner described in the document; directly below, "Quizzes.LTI" (which we are going to correct in the documentation to "New Quizzes") is called out as an exception. Using the Duplicate function on a quiz created in New Quizzes (not a newly-created quiz using Classic Quizzes) creates a copy of the original quiz with the word "Copy" appended to it.
I could be wrong, but I am getting the impression that you're not using the New Quizzes tool. Please look through the resources in the User Group: New Quizzes to see if the screenshots and resources there align with what you're seeing in your quiz.
I was using New Quizzes. Thank you for your help. I will try again. We
thought it was overriding the original New Quiz so we deleted the Copy
version.
