[ARCHIVED] Canvas assigning grades on its own

Can anyone tell me why Canvas is recording grades for assignments that I have not begun to grade?  And assigning full credit to everyone who did not submit?  I have spent hours trying to figure this out and am nowhere near understanding why.

Hello  @mayella ‌, do you have a due date set and then a late policy in place?  I have attached directions on where to look for this.  The default if it is turned on is to award 100% to non-submitted assignments.  I always have people change this to 0% which makes more sense to me.  This would give you the result it sounds like you are experiencing.  

How do I apply a Late Submission policy in the Gradebook?

So let me see if I am doing this correctly: I changed the missing to 0 and

updated. Then I refreshed to see if it took effect. I still have all

these grades canvas gave - for work not yet submitted. Don't know what I

am doing wrong!

Sorry for the delay.  I don't think you did anything wrong, it is just not retroactive.  I did a little test in my test course and applied the 100% to a missing assignment and then tried switching it and once the grade had populated with the 100% score and my setting change did not reflect in the score.  So, it just works moving forward.  You will need to manually remove the scores for now and then you will not have any issues moving forward.

Yes, this is exactly what happened. So I adjusted to 0 for future and

corrected Canvas-given grades.
