Celebrate Excellence in Education: Nominate Outstanding Educators by April 15!
I have rubrics that I need students to see before they do the assignments, however the rubics tab, though enabled, does not show up in student view.
Solved! Go to Solution.
@jnash3 A rubric must be attached to a graded activity for it to be visible to your students; the Rubrics tab is only visible to instructors, which is why you aren't seeing it in Student View. Once you've attached the rubric to the assignment, you'll be able to use it to grade that assignment in Speedgrader.
Here are the instructions for adding rubrics:
@jnash3 Students will be able to view the rubric you've attached when they view the assignment. You can provide them these lessons:
For graded discussions: How do I view the rubric for my graded discussion?
For assignments: How do I view the rubric for my assignment?

I have done this. The problem is that I need students to see the rubric before they do the assignment to guide them.

I have my rubrics attached to the assignments, but my students cannot see the comments I leave them in the rubric. I don't want to leave the notes in the general comment area, because they go with the specific section of the rubric.
@AIMEEPARKERSON ...
Stefanie Sanders is now retired, so you won't see any further comments from her here in the Canvas Community.
Just to make sure, are your students following the instructions described in this Guide to view your comments?
How do I view rubric results for my assignment? (see the section near the bottom on "View Rubric Comments")
Please keep us posted here in the Community...thanks!
I have attached all my rubrics to the assignments but when I click on the rubric tab in the menu it still doesn't show up in student view. I would love my students to be see all the rubrics in one place at anytime much like the quizzes
@kbacer ...
By design, the "Rubrics" course navigation button is never visible to students. It is for instructor/admin use only.
This solution does not work for me, as I have to use Turnitin for assignments. Though I have figured out how to mark with the rubric while using Turnitin (first select submission method as 'Text input' then add rubric, save assignment, then edit assignment and change submission method to external tool) there seems to be no way to allow my students to see the rubric.Can anybody assist me with this?
Hi @ScottBurnett ...
Since Turnitin is a 3rd-party external LTI tool, when you use Turnitin in conjunction with your assignment, it will not show the Canvas rubric below it. However, as you've indicated, if you select other options besides the "External Tool" submission type, you can still attach the Canvas rubric to your assignment. Once you have attached the rubric, then you set the assignment back to using the "External Tool" submission type and then select Turnitin. Even though you and your students cannot see the rubric underneath the assignment, there are two places where the rubric can be viewed (one place each for you and your students):
Also, I'm not sure if you know about this, but have you ever used the rubric tool that Turnitin offers? When I was a Canvas administrator at my previous job, I had a chance to try it out a bit (never in a real course, though), and there were a few different options for building rubrics using the Turnitin interface. You could then use that rubric (instead of the Canvas rubric) for grading, and that score would pass back to the Canvas gradebook. Creating rubrics in the Turnitin interface was a little more complicated (IMHO) compared to creating Canvas rubrics, but it seemed to me that the Turnitin interface offered a couple more options for rubrics that wouldn't really work well with Canvas rubrics. So, you might want to check that out some time.
I hope this will help in some way! Take care, and be well.
Dear @Chris_Hofer
Thank you so much for this quick and super helpful reply. I will definitely check out the TurnItIn rubric tool, but for now as all my rubrics are in Canvas I will direct my students to the Grades sheet.
Thanks again!
Scott
It doesn't seem like there's a real reason for making the Rubric menu invisible to students based on the feedback above. It would be a useful option to allow students one place to access all rubrics, especially if there are different rubrics for different assignments.
As it is, I have to convert all rubrics into documents in order to add to the syllabus or upload them again into one menu for students to see collectively.
Given all of the workarounds described in this forum that have many steps involved, it seems the easiest option would be to just allow students to see the rubrics built into the rubric menu. They don't have permission to edit them, so I am not seeing the reasoning here.
Thanks.
