Celebrate Excellence in Education: Nominate Outstanding Educators by April 15!
I know this is a total newby question, but when I review the BI tools to access the data files, they all seem to require Amazon Redshift Credentials, which are only available in the paid version of Canvas Data. Some of us (most of us) need information about tools we can use for the free daily dumps. Canvas Data guides that explain how to use these tools would also be nice.
Also, about the .gz zip files - it would be particularly groovy to tell us what free utility will open these puppies!

So far I'm digging around it Canvas Data.
7-Zip is what I always use - Be sure to download the 64 bit version if you have 64 bit operating system.
After it's unzipped I open it up in Excel. It's raw data and I wish it included headers.
In the Canvas Data docs https://portal.inshosteddata.com/docs it describes the data files.
I would like to see some real examples with setting up Relationships using Canvas Data in Excel. Turning raw data into something useful.
The free 7-Zip tool (www.7-zip.org) should be able to unzip GZIP files.
Thanks, Elizabeth!!!!!!!
We found that one after considerable trial-n-error.
As I said - it would be nice if the Canvas Data documentation included information for those of us using the free version.

Hi bdye.
I would like to see some real examples with setting up Relationships using Canvas Data in Excel. Turning raw data into something useful.
Great question!
Where are you in your data discovery? Are you exploring initial correlations? Or do you have specific questions to which you'd like to find some answers?
Have you watched ? In the webinar, Deactivated user suggests some questions you might want to consider:
Does this help? Do any of these questions help spark some thoughts?
I have been digging around in Canvas Data and currently using Tableau, as it simply exceeds what Excel can do.
Things I have figured out:
What I'm looking at now is seeing if it will help pull grade reports?
I would like to see some basic documentation/videos on using Tableau to create basic visuals that could benefit all institutions like she presented in the video (Page Views over time, Where you are in Canvas Adoption, Course Overview after course end, the Top Requested Queries, etc.) . The questions you posted are wonderful but I'm trying to grab basic information currently. I did watch the video Diving for Data and I'm re-watching the video again as I took some tutorials on using Tableau.
I'm seeing a lot of great examples and this would be easy for large data experts giving Canvas is providing the data. I'm just someone trying to learn how to do it all from not even knowing Tableau. I don't think I'm alone in not ever working with Tableau or any other software that is similar.
