Celebrate Excellence in Education: Nominate Outstanding Educators by April 15!
Just attended a webinar in regard to CanvasCon IUPUI: CourseNetworking - How a Social Media Platform Can Increase Engagement in the Onlin... when I opened up an EmergingEdTech newsletter. One of the featured apps was Flipgrid - Video for student engagement and formative assessment. I was wondering if anyone has used this before in their classes and if so how did it go? It says that it can be integrated with Canvas so I was wondering if it was effective. I would like to share it with our faculty if it proves resourceful and a good form of active learning similar to the CN post.
I met someone at a Canvas Chat... hopefully stefaniesanders can help me remember who! ... and she was making fantastic use of Flipgrid, with lots of example.
Stefanie, can you help me figure out who that was? It was a K-12 Canvas Twitter Chat, and this woman was leading the chat. But I cannot remember her name! Her use of Flipgrid was really cool and since then I've been noticing more and more people mentioning what a great tool it is.
I found her!!!

@kendra_jarvis , can you share some of your wonderful Flipgrid materials here??? 🙂
Thank you for this information. I will check it out.
And ssimpso4 just shared this at Twitter 🙂
And via @kona at Twitter:
For Online Class Discussions, Instructors Move From Text to Video | EdSurge News
Valenza uses a free tool called Flipgrid, which makes it easy to create a threaded video chat that only students and instructors in the course can watch.
Hi Laura, so great to meet you in this thread again, love how we keep bumping into each other on the web! I know text is your preferred medium, but give Flipgrid a try and let me know if it helped with your classes...
Hi Tammy! Thanks for using Flipgrid and ask this question here. I'm Shao, developer from Flipgrid, and we are actually looking into deeper Canvas integration with Flipgrid at the moment. Right now, the quick and dirty way to integrate with Flipgrid in Canvas is just use the Redirect Tool. Here is a tutorial on how to use that if you need it: How To Integrate Websites Into Canvas – Keegan Long-Wheeler
I'd also love to know if/how others are using Flipgrid with Canvas. What features do you want us to build to help you build student voice communities? Single Sign-On? LTI Assignment? Course side navigation? Access Control?
If you have already started using Flipgrid in Canvas, I'd also love to chat, so I know exactly what features to prioritize. Thanks!
SMALL WORLD, @shaomeng !!! Happy summer to you! And here's a coincidence: I just got my Flipgrid premium account yesterday so that I could play with the embedding! I was going to track you down later this month at Twitter, but you already jumped in here. How perfect! This week I started to think about getting my classes ready for Fall, and I really want to make Flipgrid a part of that.
And I know that @kendra_jarvis is a big fan of Flipgrid; she's more active at Twitter than here (I see her sharing Flipgrid stuff there), so let me paste in her Twitter address; if you ping her there I bet she has some great ideas about Flipgrid LTI possibilities and priorities based on her experience:
Kendra CameronJarvis (@KendraCameronJ) | Twitter
And the search is pretty good here at Canvas Community, so let's see:
https://community.canvaslms.com/search.jspa?q=flipgrid
There are not very many results, so that means we get to Flipgrid pioneers here in the Canvas Community world! That makes me even more inspired to see what I can do with it in the context of my classes. I've seen some great uses just from teachers who share at Twitter. 🙂
Already reached out to Kendra thanks to you! I love the fact you are typing as you think Laura. I'm definitely thinking about ways to help Canvas teachers using Flipgrid more. First thing on my agenda is LTI, but the first question is how and where? I'm searching for ideas and feedback as I dive into this.
I met Jon Udell at that Domains conference, and he had nothing but good things to say re: his experience doing the LTI for Hypothesis. 🙂
I was testing the Flipgrid integration to Canvas via redirect tool when I stumbled upon this post. I'm excited how well it works. Able to record Flipgrid video all within Canvas—super seamless.
Keep up the awesome Flipgrid work @shaomeng !
Our frontend team did amazing work to make sure Flipgrid works with iframes and embeds. We are currently working within Microsoft OneNote and Microsoft Teams via custom integration. And video recording should also work anywhere as long as there is an iFrame (unless its a very strictly sandboxed iframe).
Thank you @keeganlong-whee for being part of this intersection between Canvas and Flipgrid. It's a very important subgroup of our users that we are trying hard to help in the upcoming months! We welcome your feedback and ideas! Watch out for the upcoming announcement on 10th this week. Yes, that's in 3 days, RSVP: Meet The All-new Flipgrid
Sweet, looking forward to new info.
I'm even more excited because I won a free year subscription to Flipgrid over the weekend. May things have aligned all at once this week!
That's awesome! We are very lucky to have you! Feel free to send me a DM or chat if you or your colleagues have any special requests and ideas so Flipgrid can better meet your needs!
We tried the iFrame integration in a testbed course. It worked on the first try! We immediately had access and could interact. We're now looking into the LTI integration. More testing to come.
I'm very happy to connect with others who are looking into or have been using Flipgrid. The information here has been great.
Thanks!
Hi Shaomeng
We would like to use Flipgrid integration in Canva, but have some doubt about the datasecurity. I'm working in Denmark at the University College of Northern Denmark - and we have to deal with the GDPR. We also are a Microsoft 365 institution, but why question is; where are the students date ending up? Are we secure with a Microsoft institutional login - or?
Hi Soren - We have not been able to get Flipgrid to complete the Georgia Tech data security review. Have you had any luck? Flipgrid is a partner with Instructure so I had their partnership team reach out to them and they did not reply. Thanks!
I've used it the online teacher certification course I teach and my graduate course. It has been easy to both embed and link in Canvas. It is very effective. I use it for forums and to keep ongoing conversations.
That's awesome to hear Scott! I also used Flipgrid with Canvas for a fully-online college course, it did put faces to all the names in my class. It became a necessary utility since then, that's why I joined them. How are you collecting student response and grading them so far? What can we do to improve your process?
Let me know if you have ideas on making Flipgrid better in Canvas!
Just FYI; flipgrid has posted some nice Canvas/Flipgrid integration resources over here: Integrations — Flipgrid Resources
Thanks for the link! This is quite helpful. A colleague and I are looking into using Flipgrid for future course development.
I use FlipGrid in all my classes. I used it before the (very handy) LTI integration. I love it. I would be happy to add you (or anyone) into a class to see it working in action. Best, BRG
@beth_ritter-gut - I would love to see how you are using it in your class.
We had a little hiccup with the password thing, and I can’t get any of my grids to work. I don’t know if I have to redo them all.
I use a FlipGrid each week instead of a written discussion board.
Prior to this hiccup, I would say that FlipGrid and EdPuzzle are my two favorite tools to use in Canvas (using the embed feature). FlipGrid builds community. EdPuzzle provides time on task.

Hi Beth, you don't have to redo the grids! Just connect the grid to Canvas using LTI integration, the experience will be smoother if the majority of your students are accessing it from Canvas, also with default access control that locks down the grid outside of Canvas – you can still use a password to access though.
For detailed steps, use the resources here: Integrations — Flipgrid Resources
In the meantime, we are building more flexible access control to be revealed this August that will help you with your other access-related issues while protecting students' voices.
I've also used it as a student in a distance course. Easy as. We introduced ourselves to the group with short vids with these guidelines:
- name
- current position or background
- why taking this degree or subject
- something interesting about yourself
- If you were a vegetable, what would you be?
Most played along and I liked being able to see everyone (and the views and engagement stats).
We haven't got it integrated into Canvas yet so interested to follow this conversation.
I've been testing the Flipgrid LTI for a course and wanted to share some of my observations:
Hi Ryan,
Thanks for posting this info! I do agree computer access is the most seamless. I just wanted to clarify a couple things:
Thanks again for sharing. As Shao has mentioned on this thread, the Flipgrid team is always listening for ways to improve the experience for teachers & students!
Ryan,
Is LTI for paid only or also for free?
Hi @penny_christens !
The Flipgrid LTI integration is free for any educator. Free Flipgrid One educators are limited to one Grid (essentially 1 course). Paid Flipgrid Classroom educators have unlimited Grids for all their courses.
It is my understanding that the full FlipGrid package is now free to educators. It used to be a paid service ($65/year) but now FlipGrid has been acquired by Microsoft and it's free.
Oops, just read the rest of this thread and saw that somebody else addressed the now-free nature of Flipgrid.
I am trying Flipgrid but am having enormous problems getting it to show up in Speedgrader, despite following instructions to the letter. The one student whose video did show in Speedgrader was using the phone app.
Lisa, really sorry to hear about the problems that you've experienced. Feel free to send us an email at shao@flipgrid.com or support@flipgrid.com. We'd love to help you setup.
@shaomeng I just wanted to add that I am so impressed at the way Flipgrid engages with users in such an enthusiastic and helpful way.
Just for example, I was part of a good convo last night at Twitter re: video captioning. This link captures part of that convo:
Thanks for the shoutout, Laura! As I mentioned in my convo with Lisa, we love to struggle with our users, as rewards, we get valuable feedback that will help us improve our products so fewer people will be struggling with the same problems.
I'm impressed too, and thanks! I am working with you and Kevin by email. Apparently one problem with the integration was that I didn't know to set the "Canvas Only" button in security, but the others was that this button won't stay chosen, so Kevin is working on that.
Hi Lisa,
I ran into the same thing so I emailed Kevin, and now it works great!
Here is his response...
Hi Tracie,
I'm looking at your account and it doesn't look like you followed the integration steps correctly. It looks like you used an existing Flipgrid Topic and just embedded that for students to access. Have you connected the Grid to your Canvas course?
In the future, please try creating a new Canvas assignment and selecting Flipgrid as the external tool. This will create a **NEW** Flipgrid Topic which will be linked to your assignment/speedgrader. You can edit that Flipgrid Topic for any additional information you want to add. Now, students can access Flipgrid via the Canvas assignment and their submissions will show up in speedgrader.
For full details on the integration, please visit the latest integration doc. I am always available to answer any questions!!
