When I type in the access code for my quiz, it doesn't allow me to submit the access code and start the quiz. i know the code is right for sure because my teacher told me what it was multiple times, and I typed it in countless dozens of times at a snails pace to make sure I got it right. What could be going on here, and how do I fix it?

This sounds like something that a member of Canvas Support, or the local support for your school, would need to investigate for you directly. I found this support page for your school; perhaps that would be a good starting point: Students - Community - McDonogh School (and it's possible that you will find additional options after you log in using the form at the bottom of that page).
