I am teaching English to Vietnamese-based students.  The course invitation link directs to a Canvas registration, in French.  Apart from post-colonial reasons, why is this happening and how can I change it?

I understand that you are seeing an issue where the course invitations. 

I am honestly not sure as to why it would be showing course registration in french.. I know that there is a language setting preference that can be set in the course settings. There is also a setting in the students account that can be edited for language preferences. One other thing I thought of was that the browser will sometimes translate to different languages, but I highly doubt that this is the case. 

Are you able to verify that your course does not have the language preference set to be in French?

Thank you for your reply - I just verified the course settings.  They are in English.  As this is the first time students are using Canvas, they don't have accounts yet to change language settings.  Instead, what is happening is that they click on the email invitation.  When they click "set up account," they are directed to a French language account set-up page.  I have attached a screenshot that a student shared with me.

Hello @ecghoo,

The language used in the text of the invitation email will be based on the language you have set in the course settings (see How do I change the language preference for a course?), while the language used on the registration page, login page, and account creation page reached by clicking the 'Get Started' link in the invitation email will be the language set by your account admins in the root account for your instance. If you wanted to change that language I would recommend reaching out to the Canvas admins for your instance and they would be able to assist further.

when English is chosen as language both on course settings and root account settings (as admin) and the invitation is still presented in local language, what may be the problem? Tested by several new users,
