Breathing Makes it Better by Christopher Willard and Wendy O'Leary
If you're new to SEL this is a great book to start your and your students' journey. Breathing exercises are a core part of being able to calm yourself down when you feel big emotions. Breathing Makes it Better is a cute story about managing those big feelings. The best part of this book is the fact that it doesn't solely focus on those strong, negative emotions, but on happy, excited ones too!
Big Feelings by Alexandra Penfold
Similar to Breathing Makes it Better is Big Feelings by Alexandra Penfold. This book teaches kids how to positively deal with every day feelings. Teaching things like compromise, understanding, and talking things through. My favorite part of this book, besides the amazing SEL content, is the diversity represented in the illustrations! Suzanne Kaufman did an excellent job representing differently abled kids, BIPOC kids, and kids with different religions. SEL is for EVERYONE!
Markertown by Amanda Fox
Markertown is one of my all time favorite books! Readers learn about the value of kindness, inclusion, and self-worth from an un-capped marker, Glitter. She deals with rejection, self-pity, and finally acceptance. This book is a great way to get your students thinking about being kind, embracing diversity, and even reusing and repurposing materials.
