Casey B (1/17/2022, 7:45:46 PM): Hi Walter! How can I help you today? Walter (1/17/2022, 7:46:44 PM): hello, Casey. I am struggling with clutter on my Grades Widget. The Widget does not automatically remove previous classes. Classes like Bio 101, Chem Lab I, Hebrew Bible, etc. are still there despite the classes being marked as "Past Enrollments.". What can I do to remove these classes from my Widget? Not being able to see the grades in my classes quickly and easily ruins the purpose of having the widget. Walter (1/17/2022, 7:47:21 PM): I would love to send photos to further explain what I mean, but I do not see anywhere that i can attach a photo Casey B (1/17/2022, 7:47:30 PM): Forgive me for im not familiar with the terms you are saying when you say "Grades widget" where the widget specifrically is whats throwing us off. Can you explain once you log into Canvas where you are going step by step to see these past Grades? Casey B (1/17/2022, 7:47:48 PM): Sorry about that, I was doing a bit of multitasking, sorry about the bad spelling haha Walter (1/17/2022, 7:47:56 PM): no worries! Walter (1/17/2022, 7:48:18 PM): That is the widget that I am talking about Walter (1/17/2022, 7:48:43 PM): that is a widget on my home screen Casey B (1/17/2022, 7:49:39 PM): Ahhhh, okay, so your talking about the mobile option stuff. So there are only really 2 ways of removing courses that are in the past. You can either contact the school and ask them to complete/conclude your enrollment, which would hide the grades here definately, or you can try option 2. Option 2 is to go into Canvas on the desktop application, go On the left had side of Canvas, you should see an option that says "Courses". If you click it, you should see an option that says "All courses". Once here, favorite the courses you want to keep, then restart your mobile device to see if that fixes and hides the prior grades Walter (1/17/2022, 7:51:19 PM): Since the classes are marked as "Past Enrollments," the ability to favorite courses is not an option Casey B (1/17/2022, 7:52:05 PM): It may be marked as a past enrollment, but your status in the course is still considered "active" at this time, so you would need to have the school mark it as "Concluded" or "Completed" in order for them to vanish, which would make them unviewable to you as a student. Perhaps i wasnt clear. You would need to favorite the current, active courses you want to keep so only the ones that have filled in stars would appear, not fill in the stars for courses in the past Walter (1/17/2022, 7:55:40 PM): I understood. I did not correctly elaborate what I meant, sorry. The classes in Past Enrollment do not have stars, and the classes that I want on the widget are starred; yet my Past Enrollments show up on the widget regardless. Is my only other option to contact my school, asking them to mark the classes as "Concluded" or "Completed?" Casey B (1/17/2022, 7:55:53 PM): That would be the case yes, if favoriting current active courses, then restarting your device did not fix the issue. Walter (1/17/2022, 8:01:01 PM): If I star/unstar active courses, it will add/remove them from the widget. Technically, the ability to unstar/star courses is disabled after the course as been marked as a "Past Enrollment" (They appear like if they were automatically unstarred upon being marked to "Past Enrollment"). From my point of view, this appears to be some sort of bug that occurred after the teacher marked the starred class as a "Past Enrollment." Walter (1/17/2022, 8:01:30 PM): i hope that makes sense. This situation is difficult to describe Casey B (1/17/2022, 8:02:25 PM): That is the case, yes. Same with Future enrollments. Honestly option 2 with the favoriting was a long shot that i HOPED would give you a temporary fix, but it seems as though the only option is to go through your school and ask them to conclude your enrollment in the courses and list the courses in question. The status of the course is separate from the state of the course being considered Past or active. The status of a course being Present or past is determined by the dates that the school set in, but you also have a separate status for each user specifically, the enrollment status. Basically, the course is seen as a past course, but you are still considered an Active student within said course, and until this status is changed, there isnt much we can do Walter (1/17/2022, 8:07:27 PM): i am sorry, I do not think i understand. So is this a bug that occurred upon marking the starred class as a "Past Enrollment?" Because these classes were taken off my dashboard, but they cannot be removed from the widget Casey B (1/17/2022, 8:08:33 PM): No, the system is working as intended, its just that your school isnt doing what they are supposed to do and marking you as completed as was the intended use case of Canvas. Ignoring weather the course is active or in past enrollments (because this has nothing to do with your grades being shown in the widget), the issue is that your account is seen as an active student in the course because the school hasnt been concluding your enrollments like they should be or just marking you as completed, which makes the course a read only situation, and then would not show your grades Casey B (1/17/2022, 8:09:30 PM): So everythings working correctly with how they set it up, but to fix your specific use case they need to change how they handle things and mark your enrollment in those prior courses completed or concluded Walter (1/17/2022, 8:11:28 PM): ohhh, okay. I understand now. sorry for the misunderstanding. I will contact my school. Do I contact each professor to resolve this issue? or is there normally someone fully administrative power that can conclude my enrollment in all of my classes? Walter (1/17/2022, 8:12:00 PM): with full administrative power* Casey B (1/17/2022, 8:12:13 PM): If you go through the Registrar they should have the ability to fix this for you. The professor would have no access or control over anything to do with this. If they give you push back, you can come through us and we can escalate you to your schools Canvas Admin, but going through us would take a few days to fix as they go through those tickets in a First in First out capacity Casey B (1/17/2022, 8:12:33 PM): So id still advise trying the registrars office first Walter (1/17/2022, 8:12:56 PM): Thank you, Casey. This was very helpful Walter (1/17/2022, 8:13:52 PM): I will contact Registrar, hopefully they will fix this Casey B (1/17/2022, 8:14:17 PM): They should have the ability to push the changes through, or summon an admin to go in and manually adjust it within each course for you Casey B (1/17/2022, 8:14:39 PM): Just make sure you give them a list and ask for a Canvas Admin at the school, not Canvas Support, cause we cant do anything with enrollments for your school Walter (1/17/2022, 8:15:00 PM): okay, i will.
